Hi! I am Erica Schwartz, the creator of Warrior For Hope!

Warrior For Hope began in 2015 as a blog to document my lived experiences with mental illness. My current diagnoses are Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and chronic insomnia.

Warrior For Hope has since grown into a platform (both via this website and Warrior For Hope social media accounts) that connects many other Warriors - those who have mental illness(es) - and their loved ones. Topics of the blog range from personal experiences, therapy skills, interviews, and mental health news from around the world.

Personal experiences, or general posts, range from my pre-diagnosis years, the time of being diagnosed, failed therapies, medications, and life challenges as a result of having a mental health diagnosis. The blog posts in this category are coordinated with a song that either inspired me to write it, or have lyrics that speak to the message I am trying to communicate. Therefore, each of these blog posts are titled with a song lyric and the blog posts start with those lyrics and the name of the song and artist. A good place to start is with the very first blog post!

Therapy skills are specifically from a therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT was started by Marsha Linehan. DBT was originally developed as a treatment for suicidal behaviors. It is now a therapy that is highly recommended for persons with BPD as well as those with mood disorders. DBT consists of individual and group therapy. It goes over 4 modules: Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. The skills help to focus on the dialectic of "I am doing the best I can" and "I can do better." Skills are taught with the focus of creating a life worth living. The first blog post specifically about a DBT skill can be found here.

Interviews on the blog are called The Hope Sessions. These are interviews with other Warriors who are willing to share their lived experiences with mental illness. The goal of these interviews is to share others' experiences with mental illness in an effort to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. The more we talk, the more we share, the less people will feel alone, and the more hope that will spread! The most read The Hope Sessions can be found here.

Mental health news posts are the latest addition to the Warrior For Hope blog. They are called Warrior Wednesday (formerly Warrior Friday) and will be posted every other Wednesday. They will consist of the prior two weeks' mental health topics from newspapers, websites, other Warrior's blog posts, as well as events related to supporting mental health organizations. Read the first one (posted as Warrior Friday) here.

Along with the blog posts, I have created a page for Resources. There you can find links to organizations that provide awareness, advocacy, research, and therapies for mental health diagnoses. I also provided a page with links to my writings/appearances outside of Warrior For Hope

  1. Hi Erica. My name is Alicia. I was just talking to my mom and I believe you are who she was talking to at the Mall of America on Sunday at the book reading. She encouraged me to look you up and say hi! Thanks for sharing your story. Sounds like we have been down some similar paths and have similar desires in life. I’d love to chat more!

  2. Hi Erica, we met at the NAMI Minnesota booth at THE FAIR 🙂 – great to see you and fun to read your blog. Thanks for your writing and being such a NAMI MN Fan!

  3. I’m so glad you included those “who love someone with a mental illness”. We also struggle to fight for hope. Thanks Erica.
